Description
Unlike other cherry laurel varieties that have a more upright growth habit, the Zabel Laurel is an evergreen ground-hugger that if left unpruned will form a spreading mound to around 3 to 4 feet tall and up to 10 feet wide at maturity. In spring, abundant spikes of fragrant white flower adorn the plant contrasting beautifully with the dark green glossy foliage. If you’re looking to add an elegant evergreen flowering shrub to a partially shaded home foundation planting, under large shade trees, or as a border plant in landscape or woodland border the Zabel Laurel is a fine selection.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a spreading mound 3 to 4 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide depending on pruning, the Zabel Laurel is ideal as a low evergreen border in partially shaded to shady landscape and woodland borders. It also serves well in home foundation plantings. Excellent under large shade trees. A fine addition to fragrance gardens and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 4 to 5′ for solid grouping or hedges or privacy screens;Â 12′ for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Zabel Laurel is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average or better fertility and part shade to shade. Morning and/or evening sun with shade or filtered sun during the afternoon is perfect. Does not like soils that tend to stay wet or waterlogged. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause problems with the roots.
