Description
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegatus’, what we call Variegated Maiden Grass and others might call Eulalia Grass, is a gracefully arching, fine-textured ornamental grass that will form majestic, finely textured, bright and glowing accents in your landscape. ‘Variegatus’ features long, arching blades that are creamy white with a green stripe down the middle. The foliage is flexible and blows easily in the wind, turning a rich gold in the fall and persisting through winter. In mid to late-summer, pinkish-red seed “wands” rise above the 5-6 foot tall clumps on thin but sturdy stems. In early fall these open to fluffy, curled, red tinted plumes that eventually turn white to buff persisting through winter. The plumes are great for cutting and use in dried flower arrangements.
Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Variegated Maiden Grass forms a neat, upright, gracefully arching clump that provides outstanding texture in the landscape. It is ideal for use as a specimen, in small to large groupings, or as a grassy hedge anywhere in the sunny landscape. This is one grass that we use quite often as an accent in home foundation plantings. It can also be grown as a stand alone or mixed with other plants in large containers and pots. Looks especially nice around garden ponds and is a fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, white theme gardens and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Miscanthus grass variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Miscanthus grasses are easy to grow in a wide range of soils, from sandy to well-drained clay and full to mostly sun (6 hours or more direct sunlight per day). They prefer a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility while establishing themselves, however will tolerate periods of dry soil when established. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, so make sure the planting site is a well-drained one. Maintenance is minimal requiring only an annual pruning before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or very early spring. At this time simply cut plants back to just above the ground.

Bought these grasses to plant where Maiden Grass had been, and love the variegated look! Just beautiful. Was a nice size and healthy when I received them, planted them a couple of months ago, and they are growing beautifully! Thanks so much!

I think a 3-gallon plant is the perfect size to start with, especially for a larger growing plant. I received this size miscanthus in it’s dormant state, well packaged and stabilized inside the box. There was a “this side up” arrow on the box which I doubt anyone in the postal system reads, but it didn’t matter because the weight of the plastic pot and soil told anyone handling it which side needed to be up. Another reason to appreciate the good packaging because I know how everything gets thrown around and dropped during shipping. Beautiful, healthy plant with a nice root system just beginning to come out of dormancy. I wasn’t sure where I wanted to plant it so I just popped it into a larger pot out in the sun and it took off! I have always loved the graceful, silvery leaves of variegated miscanthus grasses. Nice to know where to purchase a good size, healthy plant! ———————- WBG Reply: Hi Particia – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Variegated Maiden Grass and for the compliments. Couldn’t agree more about the beauty of this Miscanthus cultivar…it really provides wonderful color and texture. I have several in my own landscape and they always get attention and praise from guests. Glad to hear yours is taking off quickly and hope you enjoy it for years to come.
