A true titan of a specimen for your landscape, the Silver Maple is the largest and fastest growing maple we’ve grown in our gardens. Adding a whopping 3 to 5 feet in height per year, it can reach 50 to 80 feet in height with a spread of 35 to 70 feet at maturity. It is ideal for use as a shade tree or privacy screen, or to reforest an open area. Handsome, deeply lobed leaves are a light green with silver undersides, hence the common name. In late winter to early spring small clusters of red to white flowers the beneficial pollinators will appreciate appear at the tips of almost every twig on the tree. The flowers are followed by green to white samaras (winged seeds), what some folks call “helicopters,” that spin like propellers as they fall from the tree to the ground. Birds and squirrels will enjoy consuming these seeds. The greyish brown bark becomes shaggy with age adding appeal during the winter. Easy to grow, the Silver Maple will thrive in most any moist to wet soil of average fertility and tolerates periodic dry soil when established. If you’re looking for shade or privacy in a hurry, this might be your tree. 

Growing 50 to 80 feet tall by 35 to 70 feet wide, the Silver Maple is ideal for use as a specimen shade tree or in groupings in sunny to partially shaded landscape or woodland borders and around outdoor sitting and living spaces. When planted on the west side of a home it can help to reduce summer cooling costs. It is also an excellent tree for use in reforestation projects. Because it thrives in consistently moist soils it is perfect near lakes, steams and other bodies of water. A fine addition to native plant gardens, bog gardens, wetland gardens, bird gardens, wildlife gardens and sunny woodland borders.

Suggested Spacing:  30 feet apart for screens; 70 feet or more apart for space between trees; space trees at least 30 feet from a driveway 

Thriving as far south as USDA Zone 9b and north to Zone 3a (-40F), the Silver Maple is exceptionally adaptable and easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a consistently moist to wet soil so is ideal for areas in the landscape where the soil tends to stay wet. That said, established trees are surprisingly drought tolerant.
