Description
An exceptionally easy-to-grow and fast-growing North American native flowering vine that quickly covers fences (from top to bottom), arbors and other structures, the Shalimar Red Crossvine produces LOADS of fragrant, trumpet-shaped deep red flowers in spring reblooming in summer and fall. Attractive foliage remains evergreen in the deep South turning to reddish-purple in fall, with subsequent leaf drop in the northern regions where it will grow. A truly magnificent vine that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow. The hummingbirds will thank you for planting this vine!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 30 feet in height or length (however tall or long the support structure) and 4 feet or more in width, the Shalimar Red Crossvine is ideal for use to climb on and literally cover fences from top to bottom! Rather than grow along just the top of a fence, the vines cascade all the way down to the ground to entirely cover the fence! Also ideal for use to cover a trellis, arch, arbor, pergola or any other structure that will support the vine.  A fine addition to hummingbird and butterfly gardens, red theme gardens, tropical look gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing:  3 to 4 feet apart to cover fences
Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Bignonia Crossvine variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, this vine grows quickly so you might have to cut it back some before bringing it indoors.
Growing Preferences
The Shalimar Red Crossvine is exceptionally easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility. It grows in full sun or shade however flowers heavier with more sun. We recommend at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for full flowering. Plants are quite drought tolerant when established. Pruning isn’t necessary, however the vines can be pruned after flowering to keep tidy.

Healthy plants shipped perfectly.—————————————Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG
The issue I had was with the shipper. FedEx notifies me the order was on truck and out for delivery on. a Friday and would get here by 8:00PM. The order did not arrive until the following Thursday and it was all dried out and didn’t look very good. Wilson told me they would work with me itfthe plants did not revive. I soaked them And planted them the next day and they are doing fine. FedEx was the issue.———————————We are sorry about the shipping problem, but so glad they are okay now. Thanks for the review! Beth | WBG
As with all of our purchases from Wilson Brothers, our plants arrived in beautiful condition. The size was great, already near the top of our pergola. It’s too early to comment on growth and blooms, as it has only been planted for a week and the real growing season hasn’t started. We are confident that it will prove to be stunning! ———————- WBG Reply: Hi Cheryl! Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Shalimar Red Bignonia and for your compliments. We hope you enjoy it for years to come. We absolutely love the one in our gardens, and so do the hummingbirds!
Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
I have ordered a lot of plants and trees from Wilson Bros. this gardening season. I have had little to no problems with them. I did have a couple arrive in not very good condition. However that being said they arrived late due to shipping delays by the carrier so no reflection on the quality of plants form Wilson Bros. This particular plant arrived in excellent condition I planted it right away. It is looking pretty shocked but I have no doubt that it will come out of it and thrive beautifully. I will continue to shop at Wilson Bros. for all of my landscaping needs.——————————————Hi Mary, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Shalimar Red Crossvine. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Sorry for the carrier problems in the past….but we hope your Crossvine grows like crazy! 🙂
