Mangave plants are easy to grow in the ground or in containers. Either way, they require a well-drained soil of average to low fertility and at least 7 hours or more of sunlight per day for best growth and coloration. As with most other succulent plants, they don’t like wet feet and have good drought tolerance when established. In containers, during summer when the plants are actively growing, they appreciate a bit of supplemental watering and half-strength fertilizer.

Description
We are very excited to introduce Mangave, a very cool intergeneric cross of Manfreda and Agave, combining the better growth rate and interesting coloration and patterns of Manfreda with the refined habit of Agave. Mangave is a perennial succulent plant that can be grown outdoors in the ground in USDA Zone 8-10, or in pots that can be left outdoors year round in Zones 9-10 but that will need to be overwintered indoors in Zones 8 and further north. They thrive in well-drained, dry to average soil and 7 hours or more of direct sun for best coloration and overall growth.
Named after the famous novelty song, Purple People Eater Mangave was named for the purple coloration of its leaves, and needless to say not because it eats people:-) It forms a neat rosette of thick, sturdy leaves that are blue-green with heavy reddish-purple spotting, but at a glance looks purple. That said, for best coloration give this one as much sun as you can. We suggest 7 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. The leaf margins fold upward to show off its yellow, orange, and cinnamon brown spines. At the end of each leaf, there is a cinnamon terminal spine. Quite the color contrast. In pots or the ground, Purple People Eater is sure to be a conversation piece!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 16 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, the Purple People Eater Mangave is ideal for use as an accent in small spaces and as a solo or combined with other plants with low water needs in containers, or in groupings in larger spaces. It looks very nice and right at home around rocks and boulders. A fine addition to rock gardens, succulent gardens, purple theme gardens, tropical look gardens, and Xeriscape Gardens (low water needs). We like combining Mangave with other low water need plants such as sedums and other succulents, junipers, barberry, abelia, and ornamental grasses.
Suggested Spacing:Â 3 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: Hardy outdoors in USDA Zones 8 to 10b. For those who live and garden north of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 9, Mangave can grown in outdoors in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
