Description

The Phantom Hydrangea is prized for its enormous cone shaped flower clusters of up to 15 inches in length held on very sturdy stems that don’t allow the clusters to flop. The flowers open ivory and progress to white with pinkish tips. Phantom produces LOADS of flower clusters that are excellent for cutting so you’ll always have plenty to use for creating stunning fresh or dried floral arrangements. A truly magnificent “pee gee” type Hydrangea that deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow. USDA Zones 3a-8a

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright rounded form 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Phantom Hydrangea can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small tree for use as a colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders or home foundation plantings. Also a nice addition to mixed flowering shrub borders, as a background in perennial gardens, or solo or combined with other plants in large containers. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Phantom Hydrangea is easy to grow in average, moist, well-drained soil. It can take the heat in the South (to USDA Zone 8a) but is also exceptionally cold hardy, withstanding even the coldest winter temperatures in the North. In the South, it’s best to plant in a location that provides some filtered sun or shade in the hottest part of summer afternoons. For best flowering give it at least 6 hours of sun a day.

Note: Phantom is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces its flowers from buds that are formed on “new wood” (the current season’s growth). This means you don’t want to prune them in late spring or summer when they’re preparing to bloom.
