Description

Our favorite of all flowering cherry trees and the first to bloom and herald the arrival of spring in our gardens, the Okame Flowering Cherry puts on an extraordinary and lengthy color show with and explosion of showy and fragrant rose-pink blossoms that last several weeks. As the bloom cycle is ending new arrow-shaped and serrated leaves emerge bronze-orange maturing to deep green with fall bringing colorful shades ranging from burgundy-red to bright orange. An upright vase shape to around 20 to 25 feet tall and wide and reddish-brown bark are added attractions. Very easy to grow, more heat tolerant than other flowering cherries, low maintenance and resistant to the Asian ambrosia beetle, this is a flowering cherry anyone can successfully grow and enjoy!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright vase shape 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide, the Okame Flowering Cherry is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings or rows in sunny to mostly sunny landscape or woodland borders. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and to provide beauty and some shade around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, cottage gardens, fragrance gardens, and wildlife gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 30 feet or more for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Okame Flowering Cherry is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and full sun or mostly sun. It is very drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. No pruning is necessary though responds well to an annual pruning in late winter to control size or for shaping purposes.
