Description
A rose that grows well to the southernmost tip of Florida? Yes! Meet Louis Phillippe, a super heat and humidity tolerant shrub rose that blooms spring to frost in cooler climates and nearly year round in frost-free areas. Also known as the “Florida Cracker Rose” and “Southern Old Rose,” this heirloom introduced in 1834 features abundant, wonderfully fragrant, loose double blooms with deep crimson petals surrounding a touch of rose-pink at the center. The blooms are long lasting and born on stems long enough for cutting and use in floral arrangements. You’ll be happy to know that this rose is disease resistant and self-curing.
Without pruning, Louis Phillippe grows approximately 3 to 4 feet tall and wide in cooler climates and 5 to 6 feet tall in frost-free areas. As with Knock Out and other shrub roses, a hard pruning in late winter will reduce size.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 6 feet tall and wide depending on climate, the Louis Phillippe Rose is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a colorful hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Also nice as an accent in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to rose gardens, fragrance gardens, cottage gardens and red theme color gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Louis Phillippe Rose is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. As with all other roses, to avoid powdery mildew, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves. Afternoon shade or filtered sun is fine. We suggest 6 hours of direct sun light for best flowering.
Maintenance is minimal. Louise Phillippe Rose do not require pruning, however, they do benefit from it. To keep your Louis Phillippe Rose full and bushy from year to year prune the branches back to about 15-18 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring. After this hard pruning it will quickly flush out and start blooming with the arrival of warmer spring temperatures. Deadheading spent flowers through the season is not necessary however will encourage new buds and flowers. Disease resistant and self-curing.

I ordered Rosa ‘Louis Philippe’ as a 3G & it arrived promptly & packaged well. There were a few too many copper staples in the side of the box securing the rose but better safe than sorry. The rose had an impressive root system that entirely filled the 3G pot without being rootbound. I usually receive roses defoliated but this specimen was fully leafed out & arrived with picture-perfect foliage including some new shoots that immediately began growing once it was planted. I’m an ARS Consulting Rosarian & I highly recommend Wilson Bros. as a rose vendor.————————————————Thanks for the photos! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I ordered this rose for my daughter in Florida. She received it promptly and very well packaged. The plant, though large, looked a little peaked after its trip. However, within a week or so, it began putting out many new leaves. Now a little over two weeks, it has put out multiple buds as well.———————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope your daughter enjoys it for years to come! The Louis Phillipe arrived quickly, It was packed well and very healthy. He’s already putting out new leaves and seems to be adapting well to the spot that he’ll be growing in. My sister has one and it’s huge so I’m hoping that this new addition will be as beautiful and hardy even though the weather here is a little chillier in the winter.
We are very happy with the quality of the plant and the level of service provided. Will be buying here again.—————————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
