Description
A truly stunning Camellia that lights up the fall garden, Kanjiro produces LOADS of gorgeous, slightly fragrant flowers with vibrant, cerise-pink petals edged in red that surround a bright boss of golden stamens. Flowers begin in early to mid fall and continue into winter. The plant has a dense semi-weeping habit and glossy, dark green foliage produces an exceptional evergreen for foundation plantings, landscape beds and backgrounds.
Landscape & Garden Uses
A taller growing Camellia with an upright habit of growth to about 6-10 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide (depending on pruning), Kanjiro can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders and is especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As this camellia grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a small evergreen tree that serves well as an attractive and colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, pink theme gardens, Asian gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter by those who garden above USDA Zone 7a, where this camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone
Suggested Spacing:  6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

We had a beautiful Kanjiro in a 10-gallon pot for many years, kept neatly trimmed to 4 feet tall and densely branched for lots of flowers. Then last winter’s ice storm tore off heavily glazed tree branches that crushed everything under them, including this beloved Kanjiro. We’re so happy with the Wilson Bros replacement. It will take a few years to get back to where we were, but this 3-gallon plant is a great start and is already setting its late summer buds to begin blooming like always around my spouse’s Halloween birthday and continue on to Christmas. I’ve read that Kanjiro is one of the most popular camellias in Japan, and I agree 100%.——————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy your purchase for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
Because of the arctic blast, I brought this camellia in full bloom into my living room. It filled the room with a wonderful fresh fragrance. The shrub is dense and healthy, top quality, highly recommended.———————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

Hey Guys,
The plants were in great shape when they got here. We are about two hours south of you, so we had to select and area to put them in . Setsugeka has been planted so that it will get about 3 hours of morning/midday sun under an oak tree. It is surrounded by General Clay azalea on the back side of the plant. Looking forward to seeing blooms next year.
We have an older Kanjiro that was planted under pine trees that were lost when Michael paid us a visit two years ago. It is now in full sun, and amazingly the plant is blooming like never before. Plant is 10 years old and covered in blossoms. The Kanjiro I got from you guys is planted under some oak trees and will receive about 3-4 hours of morning/midday sun. It was in great shape and covered in blooms when it got here.
It’s a real please buying nice plants from you guys at a reasonable price. Looking forward to more purchases in the future.
Stay warm!————————————–Thanks for the kind words! We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
It’s my first order from Wilson Brothers, and the camellia arrived in beautiful condition. I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it blooms this winter outside my kitchen window.
I look forward to choosing other, hard to find, specimen plants from them. The website makes me feel like a kid in a candy store! ————————– WBG Reply: Hi Susan – Thanks so much for for your review of the Kanjiro Camellia and for allowing us to serve you. We hope you enjoy this beauty as much as we have the three magnificent specimens in our own gardens. In the months ahead we’ll be adding several hundred new plant varieties to the store….many more Camellia varieties…so that should give you and other plant addicts, such as myself, plenty more “candy” to choose from:-) Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can do for you. We’re at your service! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
My camellia arrived promptly, in wonderful shape. Beautiful, healthy plant! It’s in the ground, planted over my beloved corgi , Rufus. I am very pleased. —— ——– WBG Reply: Hi Claudia – First, we want to express our condolences for your loss of Rufus. I and most of the folks on our staff are dog-lovers as well. We consider them family so know how tough it is to lose one. Hope you enjoy the Camellia for years to come and that it does a good job commemorating Rufus. Let us know if anything ever happens to this camellia…Under the circumstances, we’ll guarantee it for life. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
