Especially pungent, Hot & Spicy Oregano is true to its name. The leaves have a strong chili flavor which explains why its a staple in Mexican dishes, but is also commonly used in Italian and Greek dishes. The leaves can be used fresh, but are even stronger in flavor when dried, adding extra pungency to chilis, when stirred into Mexican fried rice, or used in traditional beef and chicken dishes and burritos. It’s also a great additive to flavor oil or vinegar for splashing onto salads or stir-fries. A hardy perennial herb in USDA Zoners 5 to 9, Hot & Spicy Oregano forms a nice rounded mound or low hedge up to 18 inches tall and wide in the garden and prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot with well-drained soil. It can also be grown in containers and indoors as a houseplant in a well-lit room. In summer, spiked clusters of two-lipped, purple-pink flowers rise above the foliage attracting butterflies and beneficial pollinators.
