Description
Discovered growing as a chance seedling amongst a group of Amsonia tabernaemontana seedlings in a greenhouse at White Flower Farm, there was one plant that stood out from the rest, having much larger flowers. Eventually it was named Amsonia ‘Blue Ice’. It is a compact selection featuring pyramidal clusters of dark navy blue buds that open to star-shaped, soft blue to lavender-blue flowers in late spring to early summer that are about twice the size of other blue stars. An erect, spreading perennial to about 15 to 18 inches tall and maybe 24 inches wide, Blue Ice has coarse, bright to medium green leaves that put on an impressive show when they turn to shades of yellow and gold with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. Excellent in perennial and sunny woodland borders.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, the Blue Ice Blue Star is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or in groupings in sunny borders. Excellent for naturalizing a sunny woodland border. A fine addition to blue theme gardens, wild flower gardens, perennial borders, or the periphery of stream of pond.
Suggested Spacing:Â 18 inches apart for groupings; 3 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Blue Ice Blue Star is very easy to grow in most any average, consistently moist but well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It prefers a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.5 on the pH scale. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering and overall performance. This one is more compact so does not require cutting back after flowering, though can be cut back to the ground after going dormant in winter.Â
